How AwayDayMiles Works
A personal project built from a love of football and away days โ using stadium coordinates and the Haversine formula to compare travel distances consistently across leagues and seasons.
The Core Calculation
Every distance on this site is a straight-line ("as the crow flies") measurement between two stadium locations, calculated using their latitude and longitude coordinates via the Haversine formula:

where R = 3,958.8 miles (Earth's mean radius), and coordinates are in radians.
Straight-line distances are used because they provide the only objective, consistent comparison regardless of transport mode, route choice or road layout. Real road distances are typically 20โ35% longer than crow-flies figures. Never use figures from this site to plan actual travel โ always check with a mapping or journey planning service.
What's Included and Excluded
- Included: scheduled league away fixtures only
- Excluded: domestic cups, League Cup, FA Cup, European competitions, play-offs, friendlies, neutral venue matches
- Season totals are the sum of distances from each club's stadium to every other club's stadium in their league โ representing a full away schedule
- Where two clubs share a stadium (e.g. Arsenal and Tottenham historically; Man City and Man United are separate), the distance between their grounds is shown as 0 or near-zero
How Each Page Type is Calculated
Club page โ total miles, avg/trip, longest and shortest
Total miles โ sum of straight-line distances from the club's stadium to every other ground in their division. This equals the miles they would travel if they visited every away ground exactly once.
Avg / trip โ total miles divided by the number of away fixtures (i.e. number of other clubs in the league).
Longest / shortest โ the single greatest and smallest individual away trip, taken from the ranked list of all fixtures.
Round trip miles โ total miles ร 2, assuming the same distance is travelled home.
Coach hours โ round trip miles divided by 50 mph (an assumed average coach speed including stops), rounded to the nearest hour.
Long hauls โ count of away trips exceeding 150 miles one-way.
Travel burden rank โ the club's position ranked by total miles within their division (1 = most travelled).
League page โ footprint, longest and shortest fixture
League footprint โ sum of total miles across all clubs in the division. Because every club counts every trip (A to B and B to A), the footprint is the sum of all unique pair distances ร 2.
Longest fixture โ the greatest straight-line distance between any two clubs in the league.
Shortest fixture โ the smallest straight-line distance between any two clubs.
Miles Table โ one-way league total
The One-Way League Total shown on the Miles Table index is the sum of all clubs' total away miles. Since each trip is counted once per club (A counts B, B counts A), dividing by 2 gives the sum of unique fixture distances โ every match counted once in one direction.
The tooltip on each card shows both figures: the full club total and the unique fixture total.
Compare page โ head to head distance
The distance shown between two clubs is the single straight-line Haversine distance between their two stadiums โ regardless of which division they play in. The page also shows each club's full away day stats from their own division for context.
League Comparison page
Avg total miles โ mean of all clubs' total away miles within the league.
Gap โ difference between the highest and lowest club total in the league, showing how unequally distributed the travel burden is.
Avg per game โ mean of all clubs' per-fixture averages.
Green Impact page
Crow-flies distances are multiplied by 1.3 (road adjustment factor) and converted to kilometres (ร 1.60934) to estimate realistic road distance. Emissions are then calculated using DEFRA-aligned COโe factors per passenger-kilometre:
- Car: 0.170 kg COโe/km
- Coach: 0.027 kg COโe/km
- Train: 0.035 kg COโe/km
- Flight: 0.255 kg COโe/km
Round-trip distances are used (one-way ร 2). All figures are indicative estimates only.
Nearest Rivals Finder โ how pairs are matched
Pairs are calculated across all clubs in all leagues simultaneously, then grouped into three tiers:
- Same Division โ clubs in the same league within 150 miles (up to 3 pairs per club)
- City Rivals โ clubs in different leagues within 5 miles โ genuine ground-sharing city situations (up to 2 per club)
- Regional Cross-League โ clubs in different leagues within 40 miles (up to 2 per club)
Proximity does not imply rivalry. Traditional derbies are defined by history and identity, not geography alone.
Season Comparison page
Each season's data is calculated independently using that season's club list and stadium coordinates. Year-on-year changes reflect actual changes in a club's division (promotion/relegation) as well as any stadium moves or coordinate updates. Historical data is not retroactively adjusted.
Data Sources and Accuracy
Stadium coordinates are sourced from publicly available geographical data and manually verified where possible. Coordinates represent the centre point of each stadium. Where a club has moved stadium during a season, the stadium used at the start of the season is used for that season's calculations.
While every effort is made to keep data accurate and current, all figures are provided on a best-efforts basis. Stadium locations, league memberships and competition formats can change. Always verify details with official club, league and competition sources before making travel or accommodation plans.
Coverage
Current league coverage includes the Premier League, Championship, League One, League Two, National League, Scottish Premiership, Cymru Premier (Welsh Premier League), La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Eredivisie, Primeira Liga, Belgian Pro League, Sรผper Lig, Saudi Pro League, J1 League and A-League Men. Historical data is available from 2019/20 for English and Scottish leagues.
